Adolescent Counseling

Adolescents are facing more challenges today than ever. They have access to internet experiences such as social media websites which can be helpful or hurtful. Being equipped with adequate coping skills can make all the difference in how your son or daughter faces the stressors they encounter.

Adolescents also face the inevitable changes occurring in their physical development and changes in how they relate with members of the opposite sex. They may overreact to what they perceive as unacceptable physical changes in their appearance, socially embarrassing experiences, etc.. Instead of taking in stride such occurrences, they may label themselves in a negative way, become depressed, and withdraw.

Conversely, in an attempt to define themselves more clearly as separate individuals from their parents, they may have less to say to you and not want to "hang out" with you as much. What is healthy behavior and what could be a symptom of emotional problems is not always clear.

Among the concerns you may have in your adolescent:

  • School behavior/grades
  • Misbehavior around stepparent joining the family unit
  • Bullying
  • Lack of motivation
  • Statements about it not mattering whether they are alive or not
  • Disturbance in appetite, sleep or energy
  • Social withdrawal/staying in their room by themselves
  • Lack of interest in usually enjoyable activities
  • Major mood changes
  • Internet sexting/pornography

Take a moment to call my office at (804) 282-1331 and make an appointment. Appointments usually are available within 72 hours. Why not do something now to make a difference.
